What is a Developmental Assessment for children below 6 years old?

A developmental assessment evaluates a young child’s cognitive, motor, language, and social-emotional skills. Using standardized tools, it helps identify developmental milestones, potential delays, and strengths, and provides information to guide early support.

Who may benefit from a developmental assessment?

A developmental assessment may be appropriate when parents or professionals have concerns about a child’s development, including observed delays, medical conditions that may affect development, or a family history of developmental delays or disabilities.

What areas of development are assessed?

The assessment typically looks at four key areas: cognitive development, communication development, social-emotional development, and motor development.

What does cognitive development assessment look at?

Cognitive development assessment considers thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and memory. Depending on the child’s age and language skills, standardized cognitive assessment tools may be used.

What does communication development assessment look at?

Communication development assessment considers language comprehension and language use, helping the team understand how the child communicates and understands information.

What does social-emotional development assessment look at?

This area examines the child’s interactions with others and aspects of emotional regulation, helping to understand social and emotional development.

What does motor development assessment look at?

Motor development includes physical abilities such as gross and fine motor skills. The assessment considers these skills as part of the child’s overall developmental profile.

What assessment tools may be used?

Depending on the child’s age and language skills, the psychologist may use a variety of behaviour rating scales, the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Test, the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence, the Bracken School Readiness Scales, and the Hong Kong Comprehensive Assessment Scales for Preschool Children.

Will the same assessment tools be used for every child?

Not necessarily. The tools used depend on the child’s age and language skills. The psychologist selects appropriate standardized tools based on the child’s needs.

When should a child have a developmental assessment?

If you or a professional have concerns about your child’s development, discuss them with a qualified healthcare professional. A comprehensive developmental assessment may be appropriate when screening identifies a concern or when other developmental concerns arise. Screening and a comprehensive assessment are different steps; the team can advise on the appropriate next step for your child.

What happens before the assessment?

Parents arrange an appointment and prepare relevant previous reports or assessments, as well as detailed observations about the child’s behaviour and development.

What happens during the assessment?

The assessment may include standardized testing, interviews, and observations in a supportive environment. The current package includes a 1-hour parent interview and 2 hours of standardized testing.

Who conducts the developmental assessment?

The current assessment team includes Dr. Minna Chau, Founder & Clinical Child Psychologist; Winkie Lai, Educational Psychologist; Vanessa Ho, Educational Psychologist; Lavender Chan, Educational Psychologist; and Yinyi Yeung, Head of Psychometrics and Behavioural Therapist.

Can the assessment identify strengths as well as difficulties?

Yes. The assessment is designed to provide a holistic understanding of a child’s development, including both strengths and areas where additional support may be beneficial.

Can the assessment help create a personalized support plan?

Yes. Findings can help inform strategies to support the child’s needs in daily learning and interactions and guide appropriate next steps.

Can the assessment monitor developmental progress?

Yes. Developmental assessment can be used to monitor changes over time, evaluate intervention effectiveness, and refine support as needed.

How long does the assessment take?

The package includes a 1-hour parent interview, 2 hours of standardized testing, report writing and a 1-hour parent feedback meeting. Report preparation is estimated at approximately 1–2 weeks; please confirm the expected timeline with the team when booking.

How much does the developmental assessment cost?

The current assessment fee is HK$20,000.

Can I speak with a specialist before booking?

Yes. Sprout in Motion offers a free 15-minute call with a specialist so families can discuss their concerns and determine the appropriate next step.
