Who may benefit from an occupational therapy assessment?

An assessment may be helpful when a child needs support with fine motor skills, gross motor skills, sensory processing, self-care, attention and focus, emotional regulation, play skills, visual-motor coordination, or organisational skills.

What areas are assessed?

The assessment covers six key areas: Fine Motor Skills & Handwriting, Gross Motor Development, Sensory Processing, Visual Perceptual Skills, Daily Living Skills, and PlaySkills.

What are fine motor skills and handwriting?

This area looks at the precise movements needed for writing, drawing, buttoning, and using tools, including hand strength, coordination, and pencil control.

What does gross motor development involve?

The assessment looks at fundamental movement skills, balance, coordination, and core strength that support participation in physical activities, sports, and playground play.

What is sensory processing?

Sensory processing refers to how a child processes and responds to sensory information. The assessment can help identify sensitivities or sensory-seeking behaviours that may affect learning, attention, or emotional regulation.

What is visual motor integration?

Visual motor integration involves coordinating visual information with physical movements. These skills are important for activities such as reading, writing, sports, and navigating the environment.

What are daily living skills?

Daily living skills include age-appropriate self-care abilities such as dressing, eating, grooming, and organisation skills that support independence.

What are social-motor skills?

Social-motor skills look at how a child’s motor abilities affect participation in social activities, team sports, and peer interactions at school and in the community.

What happens before the assessment?

The assessment package includes a review of available documents and previous reports. Parents also take part in a 1-hour parent interview, which can be completed online or on the day of the assessment.

What happens during the assessment?

The child completes standardized testing covering gross and fine motor abilities and sensory processing. The current package includes approximately 3 hours of standardized testing.
