What is a Comprehensive Speech and Language Assessment?
A Comprehensive Speech and Language Assessment systematically evaluates a child’s communication abilities, including expressive and receptive language, articulation, social communication, and oral motor skills. It helps identify strengths and challenges and provides recommendations to support communication development.
Who may benefit from a speech and language assessment?
An assessment may be helpful when a child has difficulties expressing thoughts, understanding spoken language, producing clear speech sounds, using language socially, or with oral motor skills related to speech and feeding.
What areas are assessed?
The assessment covers five key areas: Expressive Language, Receptive Language, Articulation, Social Communication, and Oral Motor Skills.
What is expressive language?
Expressive language refers to a child’s ability to communicate thoughts, ideas, and emotions. The assessment considers areas such as vocabulary, sentence structure, and narrative skills.
What is receptive language?
Receptive language refers to a child’s understanding of spoken language. The assessment considers the ability to follow directions, understand questions, and interpret information.
What does articulation assessment look at?
Articulation focuses on the clarity and correctness of speech sounds. The assessment identifies articulation errors that may affect how clearly a child is understood.
What is social communication?
Social communication refers to how a child uses language appropriately in social situations. This includes understanding social cues, taking turns in conversation, and engaging in peer interactions.
What are oral motor skills?
Oral motor skills involve the strength and coordination of the muscles used for speech and feeding. The assessment considers whether difficulties in these areas may affect communication or eating.
What happens before the assessment?
The assessment includes a review of available documents and previous reports. Parents also take part in a 1-hour parent interview, which can be completed online or on the day of the assessment.
What happens during the assessment?
The child completes 3 hours of standardized testing and clinical assessment of speech and language abilities. The assessment examines the relevant communication areas based on the child’s needs.
Who conducts the speech and language assessment?
The current assessment team includes Veronica Chan, Senior Speech and Language Therapist; Kelly Chan, Speech and Language Therapist & Counselor; Smyra Wong, Speech and Language Therapist; and Gigi Tsang, Speech and Language Therapist.
Will previous reports be reviewed?
Yes. The assessment package includes a review of available documents and previous reports. These materials can provide useful background information for understanding the child’s current communication profile.
Will the assessment provide recommendations?
Yes. The package includes a detailed report with findings and specific recommendations for home and school.
Is a parent feedback meeting included?
Yes. A 1-hour parent feedback meeting is included and can be conducted online or in person. The assessment findings and recommendations are discussed with parents.
Will the school receive feedback?
Yes. Feedback to the school is included in the current assessment package.
How are the test results processed?
The package includes administration, scoring, and interpretation of the test results, followed by preparation of a detailed report.
How long does the assessment take?
The current package includes a 1-hour parent interview, 3 hours of standardized testing and clinical assessment, and a 1-hour parent feedback meeting. Additional time is required for reviewing documents, scoring, interpretation, and report preparation.
